Section 4: Managing for Success

Accommodating PTSD

The same goes for PTSD-related workplace accommodations. Accommodations are based on the difficulty or "functional limitation" experienced by the individual - not the disability. As such, there are no accommodations specifically associated with PTSD, but for the barriers one may experience because of PTSD.

While not all employees with PTSD will need accommodations, the following are some examples that may enhance the productivity for those who experience the impact of post-traumatic stress.

For those experiencing difficulty with Memory and Concentration, consider:

  • Work task checklists, clipboards and tape recorders
  • White noise or environmental sound machines (to help eliminate distractions)

For those experiencing difficulty with Time Management and Organization, consider:

  • Schedule-reminders (telephone, pagers, alarm clocks)
  • Stop watches or timers for time management
  • Job coaches who make frequent, scheduled site visits
  • Mentoring by a co-worker or retired worker
