Section 4: Managing for Success

Employers everywhere are experiencing the benefits of hiring people with disabilities - including Veterans with TBI and/or PTSD - by creating a flexible, inclusive workplace where all employees can perform their jobs effectively. Managing for productivity is something employers do for all of their employees, regardless of disability.

When evaluating whether an employee needs a workplace accommodation, consider the following questions:

  • First and foremost, has the employee with TBI and/or PTSD requested or been consulted regarding possible accommodations?
  • Is the employee with TBI and/or PTSD experiencing any functional limitations that affect their job performance?
  • What specific job tasks are problematic?
  • What accommodations are available to alleviate these limitations? Do supervisory personnel and employees need training regarding accommodations in the workplace?

Once these questions are answered, you'll be better equipped to consider and implement specific workplace supports that can support/facilitate the employee's success.

** Note: The accommodations process is an interactive one and each individual may have different needs. Employers should never assume what, if any, accommodation(s) will be most helpful without discussing options with the individual.  If you have questions or need further information on the accommodations process, please visit The Job Accommodation Network.
